Avatar DVD Review: A Definite Must-See Family Movie!

Being one of the most anticipated movies of the year I had to see Avatar as soon as it came out on DVD.  At first I wasn’t sure I’d like Avatar but I really wanted to see it because everyone was raving about it…and now I know why! Avatar, by Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment was released onto DVD back in April but I’m just now getting the chance to post the movie review for Mom Reviews.

Avatar is a science-fiction love story/epic anti-corporate tale set in the future on a remarkably beautiful and exotic planet far away from Earth called Pandora. Pandora is inhabited by the Na’vi people which are blue and much taller than humans. The Na’vi are at one with nature and want to be left alone. Of course the greedy humans have other plans, and these plans involve destroying the Na’vi’s most sacred landmark for monetary gain. I’m not going to go into full detail about the plot because I don’t want to spoil it for those who haven’t seen it yet.

Is this movie for kids? Yes, I think it is appropriate for those 5 and up but you really need to use your own judgment, and not my opinion. It has a positive message and can be a learning experience for school age kids.  If you already let your kids watch Transformers, Star Wars, and similar movies then definitely yes! There are a few loud and violent scary scenes that may frighten younger kids. My husband and I watched this movie with our 5 year old and 9 year old sons. I knew our 9 year old son would really enjoy it. Our 5 year old, on the other hand, fell asleep.

Overall this is an awesome movie with a positive message and stunning special effects! With an excellent cast, It’s a must-see for everyone. If you haven’t seen it you definitely need to rent it.

Avatar is available now on blu-ray and DVD but at this time not available in 3-D and there are no extra special features.
