Vampire Diaries TV Show Review
Every year I choose a few new shows to watch out of the Fall TV lineup. Last year I chose Fringe and I’m so glad I did because it is now one of my favorite shows to watch along with Lost. And seeing as though I’m drawn to supernatural-type shows, this year I have to admit that a show clearly targeted to teen girls - Vampire Diaries jumped out at me. I would like to redeem myself though by saying that this is the first show I’ve watched in a long time that is centered around a bunch of 25 year old’s pretending to be high school age kids.
At first glance the Vampire Diaries TV Show would look to anyone like a rip off of Twilight since it’s a high school vampire love story. That is until you dig a little deeper and see that it is based on a popular book series from the early 1990s. It’s also different in that it is based on two vampire brothers - one evil(Damon played by Ian Somerhalder) and one good (Stefan played by Paul Wesley). Vampire Diaries is set in a small Virginia town where Elena (played by newcomer Nina Dobrev) falls for the new kid in school, Stefan. Stefan is immediately drawn to Elena because she looks strikingly similar to a loved one from way back in 1864. In the pilot episode, we see that both Elena and Stefan keep diaries to cope with their pain. Elena’s pain being that her parents recently died in a car crash.
Anyway, we quickly learn that Stefan’s much better looking brother, Damon, has come back to town. Damon has returned to make good on his promise of making Stefan’s life miserable…and he does! Evil brother Damon is also on a killing spree. Yes, a real vampire! From next week’s previews we learn that Damon also has an interest in Elena. At this point I’m rooting for Damon because he’s gorgeous, charming, and evil! Is there anything more entertaining than that? I can’t wait to see what’s coming next week. Will you be tuning in?
Overall, Vampire Diaries is a mix of Twilight meets Dawson’s Creek meets Grey’s Anatomy soundtrack. Simply put it should be an entertaining Fall season! If you like Twilight, True Blood, or anything vampire-y then you really should check out this show even if you are not normally in the CW’s target audience. I plan to tag along as long as it doesn’t turn ridiculously stupid…something I’m afraid may happen seeing as this is the CW. My only gripe is that Vampire Diaries is on Thursday nights at the same time as the other new competing show, Flash Forward.
