Dragonball Evolution DVD Review

Dragonball Evolution is based on a highly popular Japanese manga franchise. Your kids may even have seen some reruns of the Dragonball cartoons from a few years back or may have read the original comic books. I’ll say this now - if you haven’t read any of the books or watched any of the cartoons then Dragonball Evolution may not be easy to follow since it doesn’t give much of a backstory and it moves at a very fast pace.

Dragonball Evolution centers around an eccentric teenager named Goku (played by Justin Chatwin) Unbeknownst to others, Goku has special fighting powers. One day the evil Alien Piccolo comes back to find the powerfull Dragonballs and kills Goku’s grandfather. Goku quickly learns how to use his special powers and will have to believe in himself in order to destroy Piccolo and save the Earth.

The target audience - kids - will probably enjoy this action-packed movie for what it is. However, for adults and Dragonball fans, the plot is confusing, the special effects are terrible, and the acting is sub-par. I have to admit, however, I still enjoyed watching this movie with my 8 yr old son even if it was one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen.  Personally, I’m surprised to see Justin Chatwin go from The Invisible to this. Overall, if your kids like Dragonball Z, Ben 10, superhero movies, and the like then they will probably want to see this too which means you will likely have to suffer through it as well. ;)
