Jif Natural Peanut Butter: A Review

*updated with price changes*

Peanut butter is a staple in our home. With one child with severe food allergies who is luckily not allergic to peanut butter this is a great protein source to have around!

Recently the folks at Jif (a division of the J.M. Smucker Company) contacted us to try out their new Jif Natural peanut butter. Since we are already using natural peanut butter we wanted to give the Jif natural a try to see how it fared against our current favorites - Skippy Natural peanut butter “creamy”and Smuckers Natural peanut butter “creamy”.

The Jif Natural only has 5 simple ingredients which includes roasted peanuts, sugar, palm oil, salt, and molasses.  Looking at our Skippy Natural there are only 4 simple ingredients. The extra ingredient in the Jif Natural is molasses. Like the Skippy Natural, there is no need to stir.

Overall, after our taste test - the Jif Natural actually does taste better than our favorite Skippy Natural. It’s a bit sweeter and the preferred taste by our family. However, the Smucker’s Natural only contains peanut and salt so it’s obviously the healthiest and most natural option for our family especially since both the Jif Natural and Skippy natural are only trans-fat free by FDA definition. By the way, if you are interested here is a great discussion on why trans-fat free really isn’t trans-fat free.

The Jif Natural suggested retail price is $2.70 for an 18 oz jar and the Skippy Natural is around $2 for a 15oz jar depending on what grocery store you buy from.

If you love peanut butter and want to start being more healthy then Jif Natural is definitely a way to go! If you want the most natural option then we suggest the Smuckers Natural peanut butter.

I’ve been wanting to switch to a natural pb, but wasn’t crazy about having to stir the Smucker’s (we never bought a second jar). The next time we need a new jar (< a month from now) I’ll pick up the Jif Natural. Thanks!

We love the smuckers - just peanuts and salt. It took us a while to get used to it after eating Jif but once you get over the initial changeover you’ll find you don’t like the sugar laden ones as much anymore.

And if you stir the natural PB and then put it in the fridge you don’t have to keep stirring it. Or you can even pour off the oil before stirring but that makes the PB pretty dry and harder to spread.

    Great article!

I just got the Jif Natural and really like the creaminess of it compared to Smuckers.

Be aware…I bought it just to try (we’ve been using the smuckers and the organic from costco)…my husband pointed out the fine printon the front of the jar “peanut SPREAD” not peanut butter. IMO this is like the difference between sliced american cheese and cheese product/cheese food.

All that glitters is not gold.
