Don’t forget to smile, relax and enjoy yourself and all your hard work! Your guests will have more fun that way.

  4. Shelly on November 4th, 2008 3:17 pm

Do as much prep in advance as possible

  5. Joe P on November 5th, 2008 4:44 am

Getting everyone to help means telling people what you want them to do.. especially us men (looks at his wife! lol). Giving specific “I need you to set the table” is better than “please help me.”
And remember, a perfect meal is not as important as spending time with family. My best memories are not the turkey or the stuffing, it’s the laughter and being together

  6. randi on November 5th, 2008 5:20 am

Don’t sweat the small stuff, relax, smile & enjoy your own party! Have appetizer & cocktails, no fuss, no muss!

  7. sandy on November 5th, 2008 5:58 am

I prep and freeze ahead of time so I can enjoy the company- and with what little prep is left sometimes it can be a fun get together in the kitchen

  8. Shannon B. on November 5th, 2008 6:07 am

I have all of the appetizers ready and placed within reach. I also always have a cooler ready, filled with ice, so that guests can replace their drinks without having to keep going to the refrigerator. Having a roll of paper towels in the bathroom is a must too. Guests like the convenience and cleanliness factor of being able to wash their hands and dry them with paper towels.

Have a room set up with a gaming platform and several games for kids. Then have some of your guests volunteer to take turns watching them so there won’t be fighting. This will give the rest of the adults time to socialize w/o having the kids running around and causing havoc.

  56. Marci P on November 7th, 2008 11:10 am

I have learned it’s not the food or the perfect table or even the beautifully decorated house that people remember. It’s the laughter and the joy.. and if something goes wrong, it’s not a big deal!
Enjoy the day and not worry about the ‘little things’ because noone else will remember them

  57. jenna on November 7th, 2008 2:40 pm

My tip is don’t be afraid to use the bakery section at your local grocer. Guests will never know any better!

  87. Sharon Seneker on November 12th, 2008 9:21 am

I look at my calendar between Thanksgiving & Christmas and decide which events/parties I will attend. Most I have to bring a gift for each person attending and either covered dishes or finger foods. I just go to 1 holiday event for each organization I belong to. I am starting to feel that it is a cop out to attend parties where I have to buy a gift to exchange & food. I might as well stay at home and get myself something I would really like. I think Christmas gift giving & parties need to be reevaluated! Oh wel!….

The best holiday tip I have is to put the address of a military hospital on the inside of your Christmas cards with a small note asking your family and friends to send a Christmas card to one of our recovering soldiers. The following address is the one we use.

    A Recovering American Soldier
c/o Walter Reed Army Medical Center

I always have plenty of appetizers for the guests. That way if something goes wrong with dinner everyone is full.

  120. Ann on November 14th, 2008 12:07 am

Personalize. Guests love to know you were thinking of them when you invited them. Whether it be a table card or a dessert with their name inscribed by hand or food (icing, chocolate, etc..). It just says “I care”.

  121. Becca on November 14th, 2008 12:11 am

My favorite Christmas advice is to collect pretty tree ornaments when they are on sale or at garage sales through out the year. During the party season I always keep a basket of them near my door and ask each guest to take one home as a keepsake of our special time together.

  122. Mollie G. on November 14th, 2008 1:48 am

Seasonal background music always works to “set the mood” at our house…

Umm, “Mom”, you may have to get inventive to email the winner a “congratulations” message for this contest, as there is a fairly common spam email going around which mentions something about winning a Crest Strips promotion — so your legitimate msg may be blocked by many an Internet Service Provider… Good luck, all!

  125. Amy on November 14th, 2008 5:08 am

I try to choose recipes that can be prepared at least partially ahead of time. This way I don’t spend the entire evening in the kitchen, and can be with my guests.

  126. Ruthann Rhodes on November 14th, 2008 5:14 am

Don’t get to host the holidays much as the grandparents always expect us there. So my tip would be to always compliment their cooking, no matter what you really think. ;)

  127. Brooke on November 14th, 2008 7:13 am

ONLY use recipes that you can make a few days ahead!

  129. joanna smith on November 14th, 2008 8:18 am

Make your home look festive for the holidays, but don’t overdo it because too much holiday clutter gets in the way of your guests and will not make them feel comfortable and relaxed. Some candles lit around the rooms your guests are in and traditional holiday music will be just enough to makes your guests feel at home and in the holidays spirit!

  130. Christy Goodwin on November 14th, 2008 8:31 am

Lots of people would really enjoy a nice fruit tray instead of a cake:)

  131. karen on November 14th, 2008 8:42 am

  132. Jenifer M. on November 14th, 2008 8:49 am

Little party favor bags are good for adults, too! Even a small bag with some festive chocolate candies makes a good gift! A little bit of ribbon is all it takes to make it look cute.
