It’s been a while since we’ve seen The Little Mermaid. In fact, I don’t think my kids have ever seen the movie considering they are 7 and 4 year old BOYS! However, they both love ocean creatures so I thought the new & limited Disney DVD The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginning would be a good fit for them! So, yesterday afternoon we pulled down the shades and watched the movie on our projector!
The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginning tells the story of well, how it all began including favorite characters from the original movie, and how they all met. The new DVD begins with little Ariel and her joy-filled royal family of 9! Then tragedy strikes and her beautiful Mother is killed which leads their father, King Triton, to ban all music and fun in Atlantica. I do want to offer up that the movie starts out a little depressing and slow (however the kids probably won’t notice this as much as the adults) but as the movie goes on it gets funnier and upbeat. And in the end, Ariel finds a way to bring fun and music back to life in Atlantica. Kids also get to meet a wicked new villainess, Marina Del Ray, and her cute new character sidekick, Benjamin, in this straight to DVD movie. It took us forever to figure out that Benjamin was some kind of Manatee. Out of the entire movie, Benjamin was the favorite character for our boys and we’d love to see him again!
Overall, we give The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginning a thumbs up! It’s an entertaining new Disney princess movie that teaches a few morals too! If your kids like sea creatures and ocean themes this will definitely be a hit for young girls and boys!
